“Dance is the hidden language of the soul”
― Martha Graham
Dancing has always been for me one of the most feminine activities, and one that helps me almost instantly to reconnect to my soul.
Sometimes we have longer periods when we don’t dance. A busy schedule, office work and responsibilities make me even tempted sometimes to skip my dance sessions and relax in a different way. In those moments, I aim to remember though that every time I do the effort, I feel much better afterwards: my body is grateful for being more alive and full of energy, my mind is clear of thoughts, my heart is open and my whole mood is effervescent and joyful.
Have you ever had difficulties in expressing yourself through dance?
Whenever I had a difficult moment, of struggling or not being in the heart, to even think about dancing produced in me a feeling of rejection; this has always been a good indicator for me that when I feel to dance, I am connected to my soul and am able to express it freely; on the other hand, when I am estranged from my essence, even my body refuses to express itself, remaining rigid and static.
“You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.”
― Merce Cunningham
Practice makes perfect
If in some daily activities we mostly have to engage our mind and thinking, in dancing we let go of our mind and we let the music lead the movements of our body. Of course, this can be scary, and this fear comes mostly from the fact that we are not used to dance, to move our body, and sometimes even our body doesn’t move exactly as we would want to. Practice is the one that helps us gain better control over our body.
In the beginning – some years ago, dancing felt clumsy and strange. I didn’t feel very graceful dancing, because my state and my body weren’t in tune with each other. Like everything, when you first try it, it seems like you will never be able to do it properly. This reminds me of the first time I tried pole dance. There I was, with my teacher next to me, showing me some simple movements like climbing on the pole. I couldn’t do it and I started to get frustrated – and said to myself, I’m never going to do it, pole dancing is not for me.
But sometimes, I had small victories over myself and managed to reproduce some of the movements I saw, until I even got able to do them so well that I could explain to others how to perform them!
These small movements give us motivation to continue in any process of learning, and dancing is one of those domains in which you can explore all your life without getting bored – because there are so many styles of dance, so many skills to be learned about it.
Why should you dance?
In time, I discovered more and more reasons to dance – from learning to master my body and control certain body parts better, to amplifying femininity through grace, self-confidence and elegance. This journey is ongoing – and I enjoy every moment when I learn a new movement, or I manage to perfect some of the movements I know already. In this journey I also learned an important aspect, which separates good dancers from AMAZING dancers: TRANSMITTING EMOTION.
It’s not enough to know the technique, to master some movements and to be a great executer. You need to put feeling into it…to relate to your public, even if it’s just your own mirror, as the most worthy spectator that needs to be treated like royalty, and you open your being to offer what is the best in you in those moments, touching their soul so that when you leave the “stage” the viewer felt he had an epiphany!
Put your heart into it
Be this dancer who puts his heart on display and who offers himself totally to your public. You know, there’s a secret: when you dance from all your heart, the technique, the perfect angles, the defined movements will not be noticed and any other details will be forgiven: your public will leave from there having had AN EXPERIENCE, not just another visual stimulation that he barely noticed and that he will forget soon.
“Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion. ”
― Martha Graham
Some exceptional women that I know are very sensual by nature and they emanate eroticism from every pore of their being.
When you dance totally free, you can tune into this state of sensuality that is present in each and every woman and just needs to discover it in herself. Choose your favourite music. Some beautiful clothes, either sexy, or feminine, romantic, mysterious, according to your state, and start relax, listening to it. Dancing is like meditating with your body, letting it flow with the music exactly as the music carries it, undulating, turning, moving in ways that are dictated from inside, portray your emotions in movements, your passion in gestures and charge every movement with your true self, full of grace, without masks, without fears!
Do you feel how you just became completely free and alive, like you never felt before ?
